Dear Lovely,

You are precious, valued and loved.  Though many circumstances throughout life may cause you to think and feel otherwise you are.  There are people in your life that deeply love you, especially your mother, though at times it may not always feel that way.

One of the first challenges in life you will encounter is the absence of your fathers’ presence.  Your four-year old mouth will voice this concern to your mom, wondering why your family can’t be like the other kids families you see with a mommy, daddy and you.  Then sadly, a few years later you will encounter sexual abuse by another older child, and Sweetheart that will leave you feeling shameful, powerless and afraid.

You’ll get older and busier with school, extracurricular activities and friends….boys will enter the picture way too soon.  You’ll have your trips to grand-ma’s house, cousins, fun times and happy memories.  You’ll develop your fond love of socializing in middle school and this is also around the time you’ll start journaling about how you want to make a difference in the world one day.

The void of daddy’s presence and lack of close community you feel at home will start to color the way you see the world and affect the relationships you choose with girls and guys.  But because God has you in his hand, though you will be on the giving and receiving end of some un-healthy behaviors in friendships and relationships, you will never be a victim of abuse in a dating relationship.

You’ll move around a lot which will help you establish the art of meeting new people with ease.  You’ll often struggle with choosing friendships from a place of loneliness and it will take you a while to learn how to identify safe people…… and to become a safe person yourself.

You’ll walk with God throughout all these experiences and just when you think you have it all figured out spiritually and relationally, life will throw you some HUGE curveballs that you didn’t see coming!  You’ll get angry, throw many two-year-old-style temper tantrums and tearfully ask God “Why me?” but you’ll keep stepping.

And this is the part where you’ll begin to learn……so much that it cannot be confined in the pages of this letter.

-You’ll learn that YOU ARE worthy of love, not just from a place of romance, but from many people— a passionate, wont-quit-even-when-the-going-get’s-tough-and-feelings-are-hurt, sacrificial kind of love.

-You’ll learn that your past abuse, hurts, and mistakes do not define you, and you were created to live a life FAR beyond your hurts.

-You’ll learn that your VOICE MATTERS and your words have power, even though society tells you otherwise and you often didn’t feel like it growing up.

-You’ll learn that GOD did not give you a spirit of fear, despite past experiences that have made you fearful.

-You’ll learn that you have many gifts and talents that the world needs to see/hear.

-You’ll learn that YOU ARE FEARLESS; you do lots of things afraid, and make it look easy :).

-You’ll learn that you love to create positive change in the world.

-You’ll learn that you were always smarter than you thought and your intuition is God-given.

-And lastly you’ll learn this is just the beginning.

Have a blessed life my love,

Maya E. Moore

  1. You know it’s interesting that you would write to yourself, informing yourself of your future life issues and providing instruction as well as encouragement, so to withstand them.
The past can’t be changed, but our future is unwritten. One of my daily tasks is to act like the man I want to become.
Life is all about living and learning, and learning to love yourself is the greatest love lesson of all.
You’re beautiful Maya!! So smile 🙂

This is a beautiful letter! And those three points spoke volumes to me. 🙂
